As the “Crossroads of the South,” Jackson is at the center of business and commerce. The area has traditionally been the regional hub for agriculture, commerce, culture and government. As the area continues to grow and expand through public and private investments, Jackson is also committed to providing quality education in order to sustain development and expansion. The area is supported by a large education community. Jackson Public Schools is the largest school district in the state with 31,000 students in 59 schools. Eight colleges are located in the metro area.
The Jackson Public School District’s slogan, “Building Tomorrow Today”, took on a new meaning for the district on November 7, 2006. On that day, the people of Jackson overwhelmingly passed a $150 million school bond referendum for renovations and new construction of schools throughout the district. These facility improvements will enhance teaching and learning as never before. JPS has other reasons for celebration:
- 84% of schools rated Successful, Exemplary or Superior
- Enrollment in high school AP courses increased 400% in 3 years
- JPS recently attained a 5-year high in ACT composite scores
The Metro Jackson Area offers a plethora of opportunities to pursue a higher level of education. Eight colleges are located in the region and provide several programs to choose from. The student body population of each school is as follows:

Downtown Jackson continues to see improvements in the region. Private investment has spurred an increase in the number of restaurants and businesses in the area and more than 29,000 people are employed in Downtown. Downtown also continues to see commitments to education.

1. Davis Magnet Elementary

Davis Magnet Elementary is a Level 5 (superior) school serving Downtown. The school has a history of progressive education and dedication to instilling a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success in today’s world. Davis has the distinction of being the only Primary Years International Baccalaureate School in MS. The International Baccalaureate Organization was started almost 40 years ago by a small group of international schools that wanted a common curriculum and university entry credentials.
2. MC School of Law

Founded in 1930 and acquired by Mississippi College in 1975, MC School of Law has become a premier legal center for the South. The School is situated in Downtown Jackson where an abundance of work opportunities exists with private firms, government agencies, non-profit groups and large corporations.
MC School of Law made a commitment to Downtown Jackson by upgrading their facilities and by constructing a new classroom building and Student Center. The new construction allows students to spread out and feel more comfortable whether in class or taking a break.
3. MSU College of Architecture

Located on historic Capitol Street, Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture recently made renovations to a building that now houses the University’s 5th Year Program. The building serves as a classroom for the students with a library, distance-learning center, meeting room, and administrative offices for the College. The Jackson Community Design Center and the MS Chapter of the American Institute of Architects are also housed in the building.
4. JPS Administrative Offices

The Jackson Public School District Administrative Offices are located in the southern region of Downtown Jackson. JPS has made a commitment to Downtown by expanding its Central Office through restoration and conversion of warehouses into administrative offices and acquisition of property.
5. MS Department of Education

The Mississippi Department of Education is located across the street from Galloway United Methodist Church in the heart of Downtown. The Department is housed in the former Central High School.
